Move-In

The unforeseen circumstances regarding COVID-19 have altered our typical Move-In process. The COVID-19 pandemic will impact your Housing experience as Campus Housing continues to make public health-informed decisions in the interest of safety for all residents.

More information will be published here, as well as emailed to residents as additional details are determined. As always, we remind that emails are sent to their UIC email account. Please check this account regularly.

Assigned Move-In Times

All residents, both new and returning, will be assigned a specific Move-In time this Fall 2020. Assigned Move-In times will be sent to all students with signed contracts for the 2020-2021 academic year on July 28, 2020.

Having a specific Move-In time for each resident allows us to allocate our staff, and resources in a manner to best assist residents during their Move-In. Time slots are also structured to allow for responsible social distancing.

Please note that arriving at a time other than your assigned Move-In time may result in a lengthy delay as we assist scheduled residents.

What day is Move-In?

Move-In takes place over a number of days between Wednesday, August 19, and Saturday, August 22. Each building has specific days in which Move-In will occur (please see below). As a reminder, all residents will be assigned a Move-In time and date which will match their assigned locations Move-In day(s). Assigned Move-In times will be sent to all students that have signed their Housing contracts on July 28. Please wait until that time to make plans for travel (if needed).

Guests Assisting with Move-In

Campus Housing defines guests as any individual that is not a roommate of the assigned resident. This includes family members and students that reside in a residence hall other than the hosting resident.

Residents are not allowed guests during the current COVID-19 pandemic, including during our traditional Move-In. Note – this is distinct from the Drop-and-Go and Interim Housing arrival. Please visit those tabs above to see guest allowances.

Campus Housing has hired a professional moving company to assist residents during the Move-In process. This allows us to dictate safety measures under our contract with the movers. These movers will assist in the unloading of vehicle and transport of personal belongings from the vehicle to the resident’s assigned room. No cost is applied to residents. Residents are not required to utilize these movers assistance if they do not wish to do so.

Want to beat the crowds of the busy Move-In Days? To provide an especially quiet and socially distant move-in experience, Campus Housing is offering a “Drop-and-Go” early move-in option. By signing up for Drop-and-Go, you’ll select a one-hour time slot to move your personal belongings directly to your room, unload, and lock up until you come back for classes. You will not have long to set up or stay in your room – just time to drop off items. When you’re finished moving, your belongings will be locked and secured in your room until you arrive later in August. Residents choosing the Drop-and-Go option will only temporarily be issued their keys while dropping items in their room.

The dates for Drop-and-Go will be Tuesday, August 11 through Friday, August 14 between the hours of 10AM – 5PM.

Residents that take advantage of the Drop-and-Go option will be assigned a traditional Move-In Time on Sunday, August 23.

Benefits of Drop-and-Go

  • Fewer people will be present than on traditional Move-In days
  • Two (2) guests will be allowed to assist each resident during the one-hour Drop-and-Go appointment
    • Each guest (and resident) must provide and wear their own face mask and practice social distancing

Residents will pay a small per-night fee for Interim Housing. The preferred deadline to apply for Interim Housing is August 1.  If you do not sign up for Interim Housing, your room will not be ready for you if you arrive prior to Wednesday, August 19.

The Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner has issued an Emergency Travel Order directing travelers entering or returning to Chicago from states experiencing a surge in new COVID-19 cases to quarantine for a 14-day period from the time of last contact within the identified state.

If you are arriving from a state listed in the City of Chicago Emergency Travel Order or from another country, contact housinghealth@uic.edu to determine 14-day quarantine options.

If you are unable to move in prior to Monday, August 24, please contact the Housing Office (housing@uic.edu) so that your late arrival will not be mistaken for a change in your housing plans (such as cancellation).

Our operations have changed in many ways to support a living environment conducive to academic success and well-being. Increased sanitation measures include multiple daily cleaning of high touch, high traffic areas and increased access to sanitation stations. Additionally, occupancy limits have been lowered in certain residence hall types to reduce occupancy density and minimize congestion in buildings with community bathrooms.
